Game Development

I haven't used any game development skills professionally, but I am intrigued by how game development technology can be used in other industries. The engines used to create video games and the materials available to learn those engines have advanced to a point where you don't have to dedicate a career to build useful results.

Immersive Education

As the CTO of a medical association, the first example I can imagine using video game development tools is 3D education tools. Surgeons have to rely on costly courses with cadavers in order to experience surgical anatomy in real time. Using free development engines like Unreal Engine or Unity, an organization could build a virtual lab space with accurate anatomy to learn anatomy, diseases and conditions, and surgical procedures. While the time investment to build something like this is significant, the tools are already available.

The same principles could be applied to any other industry that requires immersive education. Using video game engines, developers can create Augmented and Virtual reality experiences for education. Training can be safe and affordable because the video game industry has created an environment of inclusive learning and tools.

The Mandalorian Virtual Sets

Green and blue screens are no longer the best way to create virtual sets on television and movies. Using Unreal Engine, the creators of The Mandalorian were able to create virtual environments within real world sets. Learning materials and assets are publicly available to create the most advanced CGI effects ever created.

Augmented Reality

Many large organizations are already utilizing augmented reality to demonstrate their products to users. People can hold up their phone and imaging their rooms with new furniture, different flooring, or different paint colors. Pokemon Go used augmented reality create one of the biggest phone app phenomena in history.

The practical applications for augmented reality are growing daily as technology advances to match developer imaginations. Video game development tools make these developments available to anyone with the ambition to learn.
